The Hobbit

Tolkien’s classic, The Hobbit written in 1937 well after the wizard of Oz, a story how a 4 foot tall, furry footed Hobbit (Bilbo, a remarkable 20th century hero) however with drinking and smoking addictions, travels with 12 dwarfs and Gandalf the wizard (also alcoholics) gingerly along Tolkien’s equivalent of the yellow brick road to The Lonely Mountains; where they discovered a flying B-B-Q in the shape of a dragon called Smaug. With additional characters such as slimeball Gollum, immortal Elves, witless Trolls,  B.O. reeking Orcs and greedy spiders, It is heart warming, tear jerking, breathtaking, extremely powerful, emotionally draining, well written piece of literature, a must read for teenagers of all ages.

I completely agree Kym, a must for every reader although I found it quite heavy going in patches when I first read it. I am still yet to read the Silmarillion - have you read this one yet?
